The Hampta Pass trek is undoubtedly one of the most spellbinding crossover treks in  the Indian Himalayas. The trek starts from the thick pine forests of the Kuala Valley, gradually proceeding to the barren wilderness of the Lahaul and Spiti Valley. What makes the trek different from the rest is the fact that a trekker can experience the transcendence of terrain within a span of 5 days. The vistas around you change dramatically once you close in on 14000 ft, nearby the pass crossing.

Day 1 : Arrive at Manali - Drive to Jobri - Trek to Chika (10,100 ft)

We meet at Manali Rambag Circle and proceed towards the starting point of the trek, Jobri, in SUV’s. The village is reached after driving for 1.5 hrs, passing trough 42 hairpin bends. An hour into the trek, you cross a forest of pine and maple trees, after which there is a beautiful green meadow. The path runs for another hourlong the trail to a spot called Chika, which is our first campsite. The trail is relatively easy, as you simply have to follow the Rani River upstream.

Day 2 : Trek from Chika to Balu Ka Gera (11,900 ft)

Post breakfast, the trek starts, and till Jwara, it can be characterized by the vast number of boulders en route. The waterfall that can be seen at the upper reaches of the mountain at the start of the trek will be to your left nearby Jwara, at which point you will have to cross the icy cold river. After having packed lunch at Jwara, you will continue through the lush green meadows towards Balu Ka Gera. Gradually along this route, the telling will start disappearing as you approach ball Ka Gera. The trail has a moderate incline and you will be following the rani River upstream. Near the base of the Bandarpoonh peak, our camp will be pitched. From here, you can have a good view of the mountain leading to the pass crossing.

Day 3 : Balu Ka Gera - Hampta Pass (14035 ft) - Balu Ka Gera

The ascent to Hampta Pass starts after an hour of a gentle walk, followed by half an hour of a grueling uphill climb. This ascent to the Pass is quite steep, and takes about 30 min to complete. Once at the Pass, enjoy the view of the Indrasan and Deo Tibba peak, along with the packed lunch. After a well deserved break, you will descend back to the Balu Ka Gera campsite.

Day 4 : Balu Ka Gera to Jobri

Post breakfast, you starting returning back through the same trail. From Balu Ka Gera, you trek back to Jwara crossing the lush green meadows once again. You will have your packed lunch on the way before reaching Chika. From Chika, you cross the pine and maple forest, before reaching the Jobri campsite.

Day 5 : Drive from Jobri to Manali

After breakfast, you will drive back to Manali. The drive takes around 1 hour. Once safely back in Manali, carry on with your journey along with fond memories of your adventures throughout the Hampta Pass Trek !!!
